My understanding, and I can be wrong, is that she saw Axel as "MC" of a novel. Not a person. She tried to keep him within the lines of the novel, basically struggling with depersonalization and caring for him at the same time. When it was proven that Axel has agency and is not just a character in the novel, she discarded him because he no longer is trustworthy to follow the plot. but also because it's proof that he is a person with agency. At least, that's what I think
